The inscriptions recite: "Gedalia son of Shimon ha-Levi called Ullman" (in Hebrew, above the bald eagle: גדליה ב"ה שמעון הלוי המכונה אוללמאן); "E pluribus unum" (in Latin, under the bald eagle); "See that the Lord has given you the Sabbath " (in Hebrew, inside red drape; from Exodus 16:29: ראו כי ה" נתן לכם השבת). The date is indicated by points embroidered above the Hebrew letters resh, yod, tav and bet ([5]612, corresponding to 1851-1852).
