An award-winning San Francisco photographer, Nowinski has created several photo essays  documenting the Jewish experience in the Bay Area.  Among these is the record of the Karaite Jewish community. Since their emigration from Egypt in the 1950s, the Bay Area has become home to the largest enclave of Karaite Jews in the United States. A sect with roots that go back to the eighth century, Karaite Judaism derives its practices strictly from what is in the written Torah and not from the Talmud or other rabbinic traditions. Nowinski retraced the migration route of Karaites in reverse, first photographing Karaites in Foster City, CA, then in Israel, and finally in Egypt.
